OWATONNA -- Former Southern Minnesota Express coach Matt Romaniski resigned as the head coach and general manager of the Motor City Machine on Tuesday, effective immediately.
Machine assistant coach Sean Clark will take over as the team’s interim head coach, according to a release that appeared on the North American Hockey League's Web site on Tuesday.
“Matt has been an important part of this organization from the beginning and we can’t thank him enough for all the hard work and contributions he’s made to help get this team off the ground,” said Machine president Marc Schneider.
The Machine have struggled this season with a 4-17-0 record, second-worst in the NAHL, and have lost 16 of their last 17 games.
Romaniski took over as head coach and general manager of the Southern Minnesota Express before last season after BAM, LLC bought the team. Schneider, Gil Peled and Chris Sweet were the primary owners.
Romaniski coached the Express to a 29-21-8 regular season and second-place finish in the Central Division. Southern Minnesota went on to lose to Alexandria in the first round of the playoffs. Southern Minnesota moved to Michigan after last season and became the Motor City Machine with Romaniski as the head coach and general manager.
Romaniski grew up in Coon Rapids and played high school hockey at Hill-Murray. He went on to play junior hockey and attended Wisconsin-Stout, where he played for two seasons. He later had several stops on the low-level professional circuit. He eventually settled in the Detroit area and coached youth hockey for several years before joining BAM, LLC in Owatonna.
