OWATONNA — Zach Vierling scored twice in 10 seconds and the goals kept on coming for the Owatonna Express in a 10-2 victory over the Albert Lea Thunder on Saturday night at the Four Seasons Centre.

Vierling finished with three goals and an assist and Cory Thorson scored twice for the Express (10-7-1, 21 points), who won their fourth straight game and extended their unbeaten streak to seven games. Five of those seven games were wins over Albert Lea (1-16-1, 3), which has lost seven straight since winning its only game Oct. 25. Owatonna also jumped over North Iowa into third place in the Central Division after the Outlaws lost for the fourth time in five games Saturday night.

Brian McGinty, Chris Bournazos, Dmitry Lugin, Dylan Porter and Josh Daley also scored for the Express on Saturday and Adam Buegler stopped 20 shots to get his fourth win in five starts and fifth win of the season.

Vierling got Owatonna on the board with 4 minutes, 14 seconds left in the first period, and then scored again 10 seconds later to make it 2-0. Just a little more than two minutes later, McGinty scored his first of the season to put Owatonna up 3-0 at the first intermission.

Thorson made it 4-0 less than two minutes into the second period, and then Bournazos scored a short-handed goal to make it 5-0. It was Owatonna’s fourth short-handed score in three games and Bournazos’s fourth tally of the season.

Lugin scored his fourth of the season midway through the period and Porter netted his third before the end of the second to put the Express up 7-0 at the second break.

Vierling completed the hat trick with his fourth goal of the season early in the third period before the Thunder finally got on the board with 16:40 left in the game. Thorson scored his ninth of the year after that and Daley completed the scoring with his first of the year.

Tony McDonald and Stephen Carew had three assists each, while Tim Smith dished two helpers for Owatonna. Carew leads the Express with 11 goals and 17 points, while Thorson and McDonald are tied with 15 points. McDonald leads the team with 11 assists.

Mitch Torrel scored both goals for Albert Lea, which will be glad to get a break from the Express. Owatonna and Albert Lea have already played six times this year with each game going to Owatonna in regulation. The teams will play again in a few weeks on Nov. 30 in Albert Lea.

Owatonna’s next game is Friday at division-leading Alexandria, which lost two in a row to Bismarck this weekend.

The Thunder host Alexandria on Saturday and travel to Bismarck on Nov. 28 and 29 before that game against Owatonna.
