OWATONNA — Nearly 1,200 people packed into the Four Seasons Centre on Saturday night to watch the Owatonna Express take on the Alexandria Blizzard in a key Central Division game.

While the Express snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory, the biggest cheers of the night from the 1,172 fans in attendance came between periods when fans participated in a hot dog eating contest and an air guitar contest.

The biggest reason for the Express drawing the largest crowd of the season — the club’s average attendance is only 618 — was Viracon Night, which brought a large number of Viracon employees and their families out to the arena.

“We love having these event nights and having companies at the games,” said Kyle Berding, the Express sales and marketing manager. “It’s a lot of work, but it creates a nice atmosphere in the arena.”

Several other companies, including SPX, Federated Insurance, Larson-Allen and the Owatonna Clinic, also have or will hold event nights during Express games at the Four Seasons Centre. Owatonna has also hosted several special nights for elementary schools and youth hockey programs.

“We’d like to see even more companies come out for something like this,” said Bill Stewart, the president of the Express board of directors. “We wanted this to be a community-oriented team, so we want to get as many members of the community out here as we can throughout the season. They might come out here the first time as part of an event night like (Saturday), but they see how much fun it is and they start coming back for more games.”

On Saturday, the Express had a balloon-making clown, face painters, a raffle, the hot dog eating and air guitar contests and a silent auction. Stewart said companies can go as big (Viracon) or small (birthday parties) as they want for an event night.

“Really, the sky is the limit,” Stewart said. “We can work with any size business. Ideally, I’d like to have at least one event night every weekend.”

If you or your business would like to have an event night at an Owatonna Express game this season or in the future, contact the Owatonna Express office at 214-1893 or e-mail Berding at kberding@expressjrhockey.org.

The answer is: B.

Now THAT'S a flattering photo...lol!

Right-on, Indian and O.Tool. The OPP has been in bed with the Express ever since the team came to town.

If the Express wants those crowds at every game, maybe it should offer those fun events at every game. Take a lesson from the St. Paul Saints: the team provides entertainment at EVERY game, not just the ones that "deserve" it.

Will it cost money? Sure, but will people show up?

My bet is yes. Maybe the OPP could be your sponsor!

Of course they are trying to promote the hockey team. Like they said, they're trying to make it a community-oriented team. What's wrong with getting the word out?

You can consider any article that involves a business as free advertising. Big deal.

By: thinking on 2/2/09

Most FOR-PROFIT businesses take out ads. The OPP bends over backward to get the Express' "ads" in, typically under the guise of something else.

If you want to "promote" something, buy an ad. That's what the rest of the businesses do.

For the record: The Express are a 501c(3) NON-PROFIT organization.

Pay attention to the OPP. They have articles about different businesses through out the year. So what?

By: thinking on 2/3/09

Typically, those business articles are about the businesses going above and beyond what their "business" is: donating money or goods; sponsoring fund-raisers, etc.

This is a story about a hockey team FINALLY doing something more of the community can enjoy. To that, I say: It's about time.

One story out of 100; not too bad.

Perhaps a better story about this "charitable organization" would be where the charity goes.

Do you know, loki8838?
