Incident at bar leads to charges

OWATONNA — A pregnant bartender at a downtown bar was allegedly assaulted after she refused to continue serving a man who she thought had had too much to drink.
Police were called to It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere on Saturday night and found the victim outside of the bar holding her right hand with a towel to stop bleeding, according to a complaint filed in Steele County District Court late Monday. The victim, who is four and a half months pregnant, told police that she had begun work at 6:45 p.m. She reported that she and another bartender quit serving a patron, identified as Adel Abdirahman Hussein, 21, at about 7:30 p.m. because he was intoxicated.
Hussein allegedly called the bartenders racist and said, “I’m a terrorist. You’re messing with a very dangerous man.” The complaint also details Hussein’s threatening to blow the bar up before his friend took him out of the bar.
The bartender told police that after about an hour of no customers, she stepped outside and noticed Hussein and his friend standing across the street. She said she then walked back inside to lock one of the doors to the building and, while getting a set of keys from her purse, Hussein came back inside the bar.
Hussein then allegedly opened the swing gate to go behind the bar where she was located and pulled a knife from his pocket. The bartender said she began screaming as Hussein came after her with the knife, the complaint said. She said her hand was cut when she raised it to block the knife, and that she pushed Hussein and he fell to the ground. The bartender then ran out of the bar.
No knife was found on Hussein once he was located by police. Police questioned his friend, who only admitted to being at the bar with Hussein.
Hussein has been charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and terroristic threats/reckless disregard, both felonies. The assault charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine while the threats charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Hussein has also been charged with a misdemeanor charge of assault of an unborn child in the third degree/fear, cause bodily harm or death. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $3,000 fine.
Bail was set at $30,000 outright during a hearing on Monday afternoon. A bail study was ordered before his next appearance in court on Feb. 8.

tell you what, when you work your tail off to barely afford to support your family and make ends meet and you pay taxes for most of your life all in an effort to have to work even harder because taxes, cost of living, etc go up. and then get laid off from a job after 30 years in turn to see somali or whatever people come in and take jobs like candy, see them get a place to live and a car and get "free" money that actually comes from the taxes you paid and then in return have them act like they are the ones getting treated unfairly anytime they don't like something.... lets see you not be racist then...
or how about one of them gets in a fight with your child at school and pulls a dangerous weapon on your kid yet they don't get any consequences but your child gets expelled, lets see you not be racist then.
oh yeah how about when you are prego and working behind a bar and are doing your job and BY LAW refuse to serve one that has obviously had too much to drink and later get attacked and cut/stabbed by one... lets see you not be racist then...

...I'm sorry but I understood (from what I've observed here) that the message body is to be a continuation of the subject. Apparently I shouldn't be taking my style guide tips from other posters. I'll use ellipses next time I include someone's name in the 'subject' line.
I'm simply not a fan of bigotry and that likely won't change, regardless of someone conveying their personal war experiences to me. It's still no reason to stereotype and I will ALWAYS continue to teach my children it is wrong to do so.

As for sarcasm not being funny, no it isn't and no I wasn't intending to be.
Regarding Somalia, I'd suggest you seek out someone in the US military who was assigned there just prior to the Blackhawk incident. Talk to them about that country and the people. I have. It was enlightening.

I seem to remember not so long ago when a certain city council member got drunk, cut off and did something stupid and EVERYONE crucified him. If you eliminate race it’s the SAME situation (with the exception that said member didn't directly hurt someone, even though it was completely possible!)

"Shame on all of you for your stereotyping." THIS is related to the 'somali' comments. People stating that they're 'all the same' or 'ship them off.' It is sad that, due to a person's nationality, the patrons here would lump any other 'somali' into a category of a drunk jackass that tried to stab a pregnant woman.
I also don't find sarcasm very funny when it's tied to racism.

In Owatonna, it's xenophobia, not racism. I've been corrected on this before. For an odd reason, this goes over better w/ the locals.
I'm not going at the "race card" with my comment. Simply put, he WANTED to be treated like a terrorist by stating as much. So, a trip to a tropical island s/b a nice lesson, IMO.
For the record, if the suspect was white, I'd say the same thing. The ELF, the OKC bomber-types, the Unabomber, the Miltia-types, jihadists, etc. are all the same thing: extremist bad guys. They start stabbing and threaten our local population, I support the gov't stepping in and making them go away for a long time.

The real story here, that everyone should be focused on is that he was drunk and got upset because she wouldn't give him another beer so he threatens her and cuts with a knife. Racism isn't this narrowly defined "you're black, therefore, I don't like you which then makes me a racist concept." Being black is irrelevant. Now do you get it?
Owatonna has become racist because we've been trained how to be racist. Racism is a lot like respect. It's earned. If you don't want to "earns" someone's racist attitude, then don't do something to deserve it. People don't just wake up and say, "gee, I'm a racist" or, "gee, I think I'll be racist today". They have life experiences that foster their opinion, or their attitude about it. Using the race card has become an excuse for bad behavior. I'm impressed by neither.

Just FYI...
It is considered a fetus after the 8th week of gestation before that it is an embryo... the two have marked differences in developmental milestones...
We could go further and consider that before 20 wks gestation it is still considered a miscarriage and after that a fetal demise...
and I believe most places won't perform abortions after 12 weeks....
